Mental Health Awareness week this year is taking place between 18th and 24th of May and this year the theme is Kindness. There are lots of brilliant organisations in Dundee who provide support for mental health, and we have reached out to some of these organisations to ask them about their work.
One of these project was Dundee Healthy Minds Network –
Can you tell us a bit about your organisation?
Dundee Healthy Minds Network is an engagement platform for anyone in Dundee with lived experience of mental health challenges who have an interest in formally or informally getting involved in giving an opinion about statutory service running, planning and development. The network seeks to influence and change the design of mental health services and supports to reflect the views and wishes of those with lived experience of mental health challenges in Dundee.
How have you had to adapt due to Covid-19?
We are currently continuing our work using virtual methods. This includes having virtual drop ins 3 times a week, these are video chats where we get together as a group of likeminded people and have various conversations. We have played games, spoke about our wellbeing and shared our opinions. We have been keeping in touch with existing members of the network but have also had lots of new members join us which any one is more than welcome to.
Why is mental health awareness important to your organisation?
Mental Health Awareness is important to us an organisation as we strongly believe everyone deserves the right to have the opportunity speak up and be involved in improving mental health services. The main ethos of our network is co-production and that is impossible without a wide range of individuals being involved.
Do you have a favourite quote relating to mental health and positive mental wellbeing?
“People working together in a strong community with a shared goal and common purpose can make the impossible possible”
