The one-year project, In Yir Heid – Making Men’s Mental Health Matter in Dundee, is designed to better understand the experiences of men in Dundee when it comes to mental health, wellbeing, and accessing support. This work is being led through the Protecting People Multi‑agency Gendered Services Group, responding to a clear need identified within the city – to improve how services engage with and support men.
Across Scotland, men continue to experience poorer health and wellbeing outcomes, including higher rates of suicide, drug‑ and alcohol‑related deaths, and shorter life expectancy, particularly in the most deprived communities. While many of the underlying risks are preventable, we know that social expectations around masculinity can make it harder for men to speak openly about their mental health or to seek help when they need it. Locally, partners have highlighted a gap in understanding how these issues are affecting men in Dundee specifically—and what practical steps are needed to make support more accessible and responsive.
This project aims to:
- Gather insight directly from men in Dundee about their mental health, the challenges they face, and their experiences of services and wider supports.
- Identify barriers that prevent men from seeking help, as well as what supports and approaches they would find most useful.
- Involve men in shaping meaningful, locally rooted improvements across services and community supports.
To ensure this work leads to real, positive change, we need the voices of as many men as possible.
