New dates released for NESS’s Sensory Awareness Training

North East Sensory Services (NESS) is delighted to announce the 2023 dates for its highly acclaimed Sensory Awareness Training, which provides a comprehensive overview of the practical and emotional impact of sight loss, hearing loss, Deafness and deafblindness. The training is suitable for anyone working in Health and Social Care, anyone working in a customer facing role, and anyone who is exploring ways of making their services more accessible to people living with a sensory loss.

Having moved the training online during the pandemic, NESS is now delivering a blended training program, offering choice and flexibility. The training is split into two parts, the first part being e-learning, which provides all the knowledge and theory about sight loss, hearing loss, deafness and deafblindness, and introduces some of the ways that someone with a sensory loss might maintain their independence. The e-learning should where possible be completed before the second part of the training, which is an interactive part, either on Microsoft Teams or face-to-face. Participants can select which they would prefer to attend when they book their place.

The face-to-face session, which will take place at Dundee Volunteer and Voluntary Action (DVVA), Number Ten, 10 Constitution Road, Dundee DD1 1LL, from 9.30am-2.30pm. On the day, participants will take part in several activities to explore the practical and emotional impact of sight and/or hearing loss, focusing on sighted guiding and communication skills as well as discussing how someone with a sensory loss might overcome the barriers they face in everyday scenarios. The training will include a sensory lunch, which is an integral part of the training. We have arranged two face-to-face sessions in Dundee on Wednesday 29th March 2023 and Wednesday 20th September 2023.

For those not able to attend the longer face-to-face sessions or who prefer to attend remotely, there is the option of attending a two-hour Microsoft Teams session. This session will involve discussions about the practical and emotional impact of sensory impairment in relation to everyday scenarios, exploring the barriers that someone with sensory loss might experience and how they might overcome these barriers. There is a variety of dates and times available throughout the year.

The training costs £55 per person to complete the e-learning with the face to face session, or £40 per person to complete the e-learning with the Microsoft Teams session. These prices apply to anyone working in health and social care, or in the public or third sector. The training costs £75 and £60 respectively if you work in the private sector.
